Amazon has plans for a standalone app dedicated to sports, a new report by The Information said on 28 December. Currently, Amazon’s sports content is bundled with the main Amazon Prime Video subscription.
According to a report by The Information, Amazon will be stepping into the arena against competitors like Disney, which is currently the market leader in the sports segment. Amazon already owns the rights to stream several high-profile sports events, including Thursday Night Football and Premier League soccer matches in the UK, which will help it create this new property. Falling in line with the new report, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy recently called live sports “a unique asset” and also confirmed that that the brand will continue to invest in it.
The leak doesn’t share much more information, and it sounds like this plan is still in the very early stages. The report even says that Amazon may decide to shelve this plan after all, so there’s no certainty this will ever see the light of day. It’s unclear if this move would be part of the service separating its sporting services entirely into a new streaming service with a package dedicated to sports, or whether it’d be for those who want to watch games separately from the main app.
Reuters reports that the move signals an increased push in Amazon’s focus on sports programming. It would also further help the company compete with sports streaming market leader Walt Disney Co.
As per the news agency, audiences in the US are increasingly switching from pay TV subscriptions to streaming apps while sports continue to be one of the major draws for live viewing.
